Dental hypnotherapy

Dental treatment and Solution Focused Hypnotherapy

Looking after our dental health is an important investment in our overall wellbeing. Whether you're attending for a routine appointment, orthodontic treatment, cosmetic dentistry or a more complex procedure, taking positive steps towards a healthy smile can bring long-lasting benefits for both your physical health and confidence.

For many people, however, dental treatment can feel like something to be endured rather than embraced. Even booking an appointment can feel like a significant achievement. The encouraging news is that these feelings can change. With the right support, it is possible to approach dental treatment feeling calmer, more confident and more in control.

How it helps

Focusing on where you want to be

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy helps you focus on where you want to be and how you would like to feel, rather than dwelling on past experiences or worries about the future. Combining modern neuroscience with gentle relaxation techniques, hypnotherapy helps create the mental conditions that allow confidence, resilience and positivity to flourish.

When we are relaxed, our brains function at their best. We are able to think more clearly, make good decisions and respond positively to challenges. This allows us to approach dental appointments with greater ease, trust in ourselves and confidence in the process. Rather than focusing on what we fear, we can begin to focus on the benefits we are working towards: healthier teeth, greater comfort and the satisfaction of taking care of ourselves.

Many clients find that hypnotherapy helps them…

  • Feel calmer before appointments
  • Build confidence around dental procedures
  • Develop a greater sense of control during treatment
  • Improve sleep before appointments
  • Communicate more comfortably with their dental team
  • Feel more relaxed in the dental chair
  • Maintain a positive mindset throughout treatment
  • Build lasting confidence for future appointments

Dental phobia

Overcoming dental phobia

Dental phobia is extremely common and can affect people of all ages. Sometimes it stems from a previous experience, while for others it may simply have developed over time. Whatever the cause, a dental phobia is not a permanent part of who you are.

One of the most encouraging findings from neuroscience is that the brain is capable of change. Through Solution Focused Hypnotherapy, we can strengthen the neural pathways associated with calmness, confidence and a sense of control, helping old patterns of fear become less dominant.

Rather than analysing negative experiences, Solution Focused Hypnotherapy focuses on your strengths, resources and preferred future. Together, we work towards helping you feel more comfortable attending appointments, communicating with your dental team and approaching treatment with a greater sense of ease.

From Catherine

A personal understanding

Throughout my own life, I have undergone extensive dental treatment and have learned first-hand how to manage the challenging feelings that can arise before and during procedures. Because of this experience, I understand both the practical and emotional aspects of dental treatment and the difference that the right support can make.

Clients regularly tell me that our hypnotherapy sessions, together with the personalised relaxation MP3 I provide, help them feel significantly calmer before appointments. Many also find it beneficial to listen to the recording during dental procedures themselves, helping them remain relaxed, focused and comfortable throughout their treatment.

My aim is to help you feel calm, confident and empowered, so that dental treatment becomes something you can approach with greater ease and self-belief. Whether you would like support with a long-standing dental phobia or simply want to feel more relaxed during treatment, Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help you develop the tools and mindset needed to create a more positive experience.

What to expect

How we'd work together

Sessions are calm and unhurried, in person at The Clifton Practice in Bristol or online, whichever suits you best.

1

A free, informal chat

We start with a relaxed conversation about how you feel about dental treatment and what you would like to be different. There's no pressure at all, just a friendly first step.

2

Understanding the fear

We look at how the brain creates fear and why it shows up at the dentist. Understanding what's happening is often a relief in itself, and the first step towards feeling differently.

3

Calm, and a recording to take with you

Each session finishes with gentle, guided relaxation. I also provide a personalised MP3 that many clients listen to before, and even during, appointments to stay relaxed and comfortable.
